Brush Up Your Euler

Let's repeat, what is said in the preface about this page: This page is still a work in progress. It contains the parody of the German translation of a song of American origin. Of course, it's rather impossible for a non native speaker to re-translate the parody into English, let alone to write a parody of the English original. So, if you feel inclined …

However, it may be interesting for you, to hear the German translation of the Cole Porter song Brush Up Your Shakespeare on YouTube. By the way, to my personal opinion this is one of the rare cases, that the translation or rather free adaptation (by Günter Neumann) is better than the original lyrics. Of course, the original is also available on YouTube, e.g. here.

When I stumbled upon the said YouTube video, I once again had to realize, that a pretty good knowledge of literature obviously is indispensable to a smart guy (or a sophisticated lady), while knowledge of math is a nerd's business.

So, in an act of defiance, I tried to write a parody of the German translation of the song, with Shakespeare replaced by Euler and literature replaced by mathematics. As already said, I am not capable to do the same in English. You will find the complete text of German parody at the German version of this page.

To give you an impression of the metamorphosis from the English original via the German translation to the parody, I will quote the first few verses of each in a synoptic view:

Brush Up Your Shakespeare Schlag nach bei Shakespeare Schlag nach bei Euler
From Kiss me Kate by Cole Porter Translation by Günter Neumann Parody of Schlag nach bei Shakespeare
